Playwright Ebo whyte has stated that women who are independent make better wives.

Uncle Ebo as he is affectionately called said this at the press briefing of the premiere of his 33rd consecutive stage play ‘Blackmail’ at the National Theatre last night.

Speaking on the inspiration of the play and the characters, Ebo Whyte said the character of Mama Gifty, the wife of Pastor Elisha speaks to the tendency of men to be intimidated by the progress, freedom and independence of women; something he sees as very unfortunate.

“I think it is one of the most unfortunate things in life because a woman who is independent makes a better wife, a better spouse. She is happier, she is more fulfilled, so she doesn’t depend on you too much for her emotional fulfillment because she has a life of her own”

He said men struggle with these freedoms and independence of women because they would rather cripple women and make them totally dependent on men.

“Men struggle with that, we would like to cripple all the women and make them beholding to us, and dependent on us. I don’t think it is the way it ought to be”, he concluded.

Synopsis of the play ‘Blackmail’

On the eve of his consecration to the office of a bishop, Reverend Elisha receives the shocking news that his wife has been cheating with a member of their church. Before he could deal with this heart-breaking news, an even darker secret that was left buried in the USA rears its ugly head. It threatens to destroy his marriage further, and end his career as a renowned preacher in one of the biggest churches in Ghana.

Within 24 hours, he has to take a decision; one that has the potential to make him lose either his wife or his ministry, or both.
