Body Lotion hit makers; KECHE in an exclusive interview with yfmghana.com has revealed it’s never women or money that splits music groups.
Known for hits including Pressure, Body Lotion and Aluguntugui, the duo made of Joshua and Andrew said friends of artists in groups were the main reason why these groups split.
“When you are in a group, it’s not about the women, it’s not about money. When we started making hits and the money and fame started coming. We started having calls from friends. They tell me my group mate Andrew wasn’t any extraordinary singer. The things friends say to us the artists when we are in a group influence some of the decisions we take.
“Depending on the crowd; when we go to a show and the fans are mostly ladies, you will hear them screaming the singing part of the songs and when it’s male dominated, you hear the guys scream the rap part more. The same friends after seeing this come back to tell you, did you just hear how everyone was screaming your part and not responding to your mate?
“When you are not smart enough, you will believe them and quit your group. Understanding is everything and putting everything aside when it comes to your brand is important. Don’t let money; friends or women come between you, your group mate and the fans of your group.
“No matter how big you are, when you leave your group, your chance of making it bigger is very slim. This is Africa where artists hardly make it big after they leave their group.”
Joshua, who is one-half of the KECHE brand added;
“The crowd reaction to the rap or singing part of our song doesn’t get to our heads. That helps us arrange better setlists for our next show. So at this point in our career, when we arrive at a venue, a member of the team scans the audience before it’s our time to mount the stage and that’s how we know if we should do the songs that have more singing or the songs that have more rap in them. It’s all about balance and we don’t want to get too excited and derail.”
