BlacVolta is a popular content creator in Ghana
Ghanaian content creator and BlacVolta founder Joseph Adjei has issued a formal apology following the resurfacing of old tweets in which he made posts widely condemned as rape apologist and containing references to minors in a sexual context, but the statement has done little to quell public anger.
In a personal statement dated May 14, 2026, Adjei acknowledged that some of the posts from the 2010-2011 period were offensive and wrong, and apologised to women and survivors who were hurt by the content.
"The language and casual jokes normalizing and trivializing serious sexual violence were extreme, unacceptable, and I understand the disappointment, hurt, and anger this has caused, especially to women and survivors. For that, I am sincerely sorry," he wrote.
He also sought to distance himself from some of the circulating screenshots, claiming that the account in question was originally a personal account before it was transitioned to the official BlacVolta X account, and that some of the screenshots were not authentic and had been shared out of context.
Looking ahead, Adjei pledged to personally engage with organisations focused on gender-based violence awareness and women's empowerment, and said he would work to create safer spaces within the BlacVolta brand.
However, the apology has been met with widespread scepticism and derision on social media, with many questioning both its sincerity and its substance.
"This is an embarrassing ChatGPT-written apology," one user wrote. Another was more pointed: "Bro says the screenshots are not authentic. Nah, bro is not sorry. This is all a facade."
Several users took issue specifically with his claim that some screenshots were inauthentic, noting that the tweets that sparked the most outrage were pulled directly from his public timeline.
"The tweets people reacted to were pulled directly from your timeline. That contradiction weakens the apology — you're denying instead of taking accountability," one commenter said.
Others found his pledges for the future vague and unconvincing. "You're going to 'take the lead in ensuring right measures are put in place moving forward around consent' what the hell does that mean?" one user asked.
