'Bra’ vs ‘Sanbra’: Akwaboah gets opportunity to claim Songwriter award from King Promise

Renowned songwriter Akwaboah has been nominated in the Songwriter of the Year category at the 21st edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) after losing to King Promise last year.

King Promise on the other hand gets to defend the title after winning with CCTV at the 20th edition. He beat competition from Fuse ODG – Bra Fie, Teephlow – Forgive, Akwaboah – Hye Me Bo, Trigmatic – Where We Dey Go and Stonebwoy – Tomorrow.

This year, both King Promise and Akwaboah have been nominated alongside four others.

While Akwaboah earned nomination with ‘Sanbra’, King Promise occupies a spot with ‘Bra’. The two however will face fierce competition from Kofi Kinaata, Lamisi, Diana Hamilton and Epixode as ‘Things Fall Apart’, ‘Oh Me’, ‘W’asem’ and ‘Wahala Dey’ respectively were nominated.

Meanwhile, out of the 10 slots for the Best Video of the Year category, the gospel music industry had only one representation – Celestine Donkor’s ‘Agbebolo’.

Released in May 2019, the video shot and directed by Abass faces competition from Cina Soul’s ‘Killi Mi’, RJZ’s ‘Bye Bye’, ‘Medikal’s ‘Drip’, Becca’s ‘Yes I Do’, Kuami Eugene’s ‘Obiaato’, EL’s ‘Ehua’, Joey B’s La Familia’, ZeeTM’s ‘Totori’ and Epixode’s ‘Wahala Dey’.

Celestine Donkor alongside Joe Mettle, Joyce Blessing, Akesse Brempong, Diana Hamilton and MOG Music have been nominated in the Gospel Artiste of the Year category.

Her song ‘Agbebolo’ (Bread of Life) has also been nominated for Gospel Song of the Year. Also in that category are ‘Mehia Wo Yesu’ by Joe Mettle, ‘Repent’ by Joyce Blessing, ‘Hallelujah’ by MOG Music and ‘Mpaebo’ by Nacee.

Diana Hamilton who won both Gospel Artiste of the Year and Gospel Song of the Year at the 20th edition looks forward to defending her title as her record ‘W’asem’ has also been nominated.
