Ghana’s Hiplife sensation, Castro D’ Destroyer last weekend had his name imprinted on the minds of most Berliners as he stole a road show in the German capital.

The event was part of activities marking a decade-old carnival of cultures, an annual programme organized by the people of Berlin in May, just before the beginning of the summer, giving the city with the highest number of foreign residents in Germany- about 450,000- the opportunity to showcase their culture.

The carnival consists of a parade through Kruzeberg, Berlin’s business district, and several days of partying on Blucherplatz. The colourful spectacle pulls the crowd year after year with up to two million flocking to the German capital from all over the world.

Tourists from every corner of the world had trouped to the German capital for the Carnival and at a temperature of 25 degree celsius, it was a good time to make merry with companies and non profit making organizations joining the fray.

It was also time to make money as traders mounted mini stalls along the streets and in some parks and engaged in the selling of various items ranging from food to artifacts.

Treating the crowd to songs from his three albums as well as mimicking the tracks of other local musicians such as Mizbel, Ofori Amponsah, Obuor and Screw Face among others, Castro got spectators scrambling to join the Ghanaian group.

As a result, the Ghanaian caravan, which served as stage for Castro, had the largest following, compared to all the participating groups.

At a snail’s pace, the caravan moved on while the bright colours of the Ghana flag as well hand woven Kente cloth were seen flying everywhere.

“The music is too irresistible,” a student tourist said. “Go Ghana’, ‘Go Ghana,” both foreign and patriotic citizens of Ghanaian residents in Germany shouted after Castro.

Theophilus Tagoe popularly called Castro De Destroyer was invited by a group of Ghanaians resident in Germany for a three-week stay.

Though the Carnival was the main itinerary on his list, one of the organizers, Fatima Adamu Suka, a Ghanaian resident in Germany, told BEATWAVES in Berlin that a series of programmes were lined up in other parts of Germany where Castro was expected to perform.

This was the fifth time the Ghanaian group was participating and this year the road show was dedicated to the national senior football team, the Black Stars; and when BEATWAVES quizzed Fatima about that decision, she said, “That was how we could say thank you to them for their wonderful performance at the 2006 World Cup tournament in Germany and their outstanding performance in the African Cup fiesta.”

The Ghanaian who has been in Germany for the past 17 years, observed that the festival was the German capital’s way of presenting its cultural diversity to the world and “I think it was good Ghana participated as it would promote tourism.
