Charter house Productions Limited has been given the franchise to organise a pageant and select a Ghanaian representative for this year’s Miss Malaika fiesta. The local organisation of the event was previously done by Studio One.

The Miss Malaika event is similar in many ways to the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants. The concept of the event originated at the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group Summit in the Dominican Republic in 1999 after a presentation by Mr Ernest Coovi Adjovi of the Kora Entertainment, to the Heads of States and Government who were present.

The event promotes African Renaissance through African culture, to celebrate and unite the continent and its Diaspora. It is also aimed at providing women of African descent with the opportunity to recognise the potential of their beauty and talents, not judged on Western standards and criteria.

After staging two successful editions of the international event in South Africa and Zimbabwe, the pageant is gradually gaining momentum.

This year, the ultimate winner will take home a laptop computer, a bracelet from Schwarts Jewellers, holiday vouchers from Sun International and a Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor, sponsored by Kora Entertainment.

The winner will also represent the youth of Africa at the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) During the local contest, cameras will follow participants through the selection process and aspects of their daily lives in “camp”. This will be shown on TV3 for viewers and thus offer them the opportunity to better assess the participants.

Three preliminaries will be held in Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi to select 12 participants. Prospective participants must be single women of African origin, between the ages of 18 and 26, and sizes, 10 and 14.

There is no height restrictions, no breast implants and candidates must have completed at least Senior Secondary School.
