Chaskele event held in Accra

An exciting creative arts piece focused on plastic waste and its attendant sanitation challenges has been held in Accra.

Christened “Chaskele – Kick the filth” the performance was part of a PhD Thesis Project presentation of Mr. Solomon Yaw Dartey on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the auspices of the School of Creative Arts, University of Education, Winneba in collaboration with the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, and Calabash Farm.

The event, which took place at the LaNMMA Assembly Hall on Thursday 27 June 2019, was graced with the presence of Hon. Jennifer Dede Afagbedzi (MCE-LaNMMA), Mr Bernard Brock (Dir. Admin – LaNMMA), LaNMMA Staff & Assembly members, Dr Faustina Brew (Supervisor-UEW), Rep from the following organizations Plastic Punch, Folklore Board, Zoomlion, and School of Performing Arts – UG as well as members from the Madina community.

The performance used a fusion of folk songs and games, narrations, symbolic movements, imagery, video documentary, and crafted dialogues to tell the stories of SDG 3, 6 and 15.

Mr. Solomon Yaw Dartey, director of the performance and PHD candidate of the University of Education, Winneba, drew the attention of the audience and the wider Ghanaian public to the “impending tragedy that would befall humanity if we do not desist from the indiscriminate felling of trees, pollution of water bodies, open defecation, improper disposal of waste, and air contamination.”

The performance demonstrated to the audience that if they continue to have their say against the forces of nature, for example by building along the paths of water bodies, nature will continue to have its way by flooding and destroying their hard-earned properties.

In a post-performance discussion, there a unanimous agreement and appeal by most of the audience that there is work to be done. Most of the speakers during the discussion, including the MCE of La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA), joined in the self-declaration as ambassadors of a clean and Healthy society. The discussion echoed the 4Rs approach to plastic waste management – Reuse, Refuse, Reduce & Recycle.
