Smooth singer, Chemphe has explained the rationale behind his advocacy album “Why you dey treat am bad”, which is against domestic violence, saying it was because of an incident he witnessed in which a naked woman was fleeing the wrath of her furious partner.
In a video premiered at the launching of the album at the Coconut Groove Hotel in Accra, Chemphe said “I was once returning from the studio in a taxicab and we came across this naked woman who was being chased by her partner. We stopped to offer some help.
We however did not take the law into our own hands to deal with the partner. I got home and thought about the whole incident, then the song
‘Why You Dey Treat Am Bad’ came”.
He said the fight against Domestic Violence was dear to his heart and passionately appealed to society to resist any form of violence, especially against children and women.
Sunday’s ceremony coincided with the international day of eliminating all forms of domestic violence.
He performed the titled track “Why you dey treat am bad” and two other tracks, all stressing on the prevention of any form of violence.
His performance preceded that of upcoming artistes “2GA”, who set guests agog with the rendition of their songs fused with reggae rhythms.
Addressing guests, Mr. Albert Ankrah of Chemphe’s management team said, “We are supporting the fight to help put all hands on deck to check domestic violence,” adding “Ghanaians should know that this kind of thing is still happening in this our society.”
He reiterated that the artiste would embark on a nationwide tour to seek more support for the fight against domestic violence.
Launching the album, Mrs. Christiana Boateng Ankamah, an official from the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs said domestic violence was a social evil destroying Ghana.
According to her, it was something one really feels when it happens to a close relative, and congratulated Chemphe for his efforts to educate people on it.
She used the opportunity to disclose plans of her ministry concerning domestic violence. She mentioned that fast track courts would be built specially to handle domestic violence cases.
She added that there would also be a fund set aside to provide temporarily provide shelter for victims while cases are being handled.
