Mpasaso (Ash), May 16, GNA - A traditional ruler has proposed to the Ahafo-Ano South District Assembly to enact a by-law that would help regulate the organisation of video shows in communities within the District.
Nana Tabiri Gyansah III, Paramount chief of the Mpasaso Traditional Area, who made the proposal, said such a by-law should also be backed by the appropriate sanctions.
Nana Gyansah was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Mpasaso on Sunday, on measures being put in place by the Mpasaso Traditional Council to help improve education in the area and also enhance good morals among the youth.
The chief said the proliferation of video and other entertainment activities in the local communities was largely contributing to the falling standards of education in the district.
"School pupils spend all their precious time in the night at video shows instead of using it more productively on their books", he noted. Nana Gyansah said video shows also have the tendency to expose school children to immoral conducts and values that seem to be undermining the people's cultural values and traditions. The chief entreated landlords not to rent out their houses to video operators without the appropriate permit and approval by the Assembly and the Traditional Council.
"Even if landlords should agree to rent out their houses for such entertainments, they should ensure that school children do not patronise them," he added.
