Chop-bar operator pours boiling soup on driver's mate

Kofiase (Ash), Jan 13, GNA- An argument over a torn 1,000-cedis note between an 18-year-old driver's mate, Yaw Sarpong and a chop-bar operator at Kofiase near Asante-Mampong nearly ended the life of the mate when the chop-bar operator poured boiling soup on him. Sarpong fell into a coma and was rushed to the Mampong District Hospital where he is responding to treatment.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the incident at Mampong on Monday, Mr Emmanuel Arzah, the acting Mampong Divisional Crime Officer, said on Saturday, the victim bought 1,500 cedis worth of cooked rice from Naomi Boakye, 20, who operates a chop-bar at Kofiase.

The Divisional Crime Officer said in paying for the rice, the victim gave Naomi two notes in 1,000 cedis denominations with one torn. Noami, therefore, refused the torn one.

He said Sarpong claimed that, that was the only money on him and therefore pleaded with her to accept it but she refused and demanded her 500 cedis from the driver's mate.

Mr Arzah said, a quarrel therefore ensued between them and Naomi in the process fetched a pan of boiling soup from the fire and poured it on Sarpong.

The Divisional Crime Officer said the victim fell into a coma and had to be rushed to the Mampong hospital where he was admitted. The police officer said Naomi was consequently arrested but she was granted police enquiry bail and that she would be put before court soon.
