Closure of sanctioned radio stations by NCA may warrant court action - DJ Oxy

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Oxy FM, Mr. Alfred Kwame Larbi aka DJ Oxy has posited that, the National Communications Authority (NCA) cannot close down any of the radio stations sanctioned.

He has called on the legal advisor for the state body to advice authorities at the NCA to tread cautiously to prevent any legal tussles against them.

He was responding to a hint given by the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful that the NCA will close down any of the 131 radio stations that fails to comply with the sanctions.

The NCA some few weeks ago, sanctioned some 131 radio stations for various offences including nonpayment of fees and renewal of licenses. Additionally, the Authority revoked the licenses of some stations while others were fined in line with Section 13 of the Electronics Communications Act (2009), Act 775.

Responding to action by the Authority, DJ Oxy said the NCA erred with some of the actions taken and in his view, the body maybe facing serious challenges due to their actions taken.

He also indicated that the NCA may have politically taken their action against some of the radio stations including Radio Gold.

Radio Gold was fined GHc 61,330,000 for failing to renew its license over a long period.

Oxy however believes that, this cannot be entirely true considering the fact that some managers of the station, worked at top levels at the NCA and knew the rules and could not have violated same.

According to him, his lawyers are also studying the issue and may advise themselves on what to do next. He also admonished the NCA to go digital to allow more people be authorized to operate. He was speaking to Agyemang Prempeh on GH Entertainment.
