Veteran Ghanaian Highlife artiste Rex Omar has expressed his support for 24-hour clubs as part of the ‘24-hour Economy Policy’ initiative proposed by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama.

According to him, the intended policy is proof that Mahama is “current” unlike Vice President Bawumia, whom he described as having an "old school" mindset despite being younger.

In an interview with Michachu TV, Rex Omar, who is a staunch NDC supporter, highlighted the benefits of having facilities such as clubs, casinos, and restaurants open around the clock, similar to what is seen in some countries like South Africa, Switzerland and the UK.

"Do Ghanaians want to tell me they've not heard of Afternoon jams? (Being able to go to the club in the afternoon) is part of the 24-hour economy.

“Mahama knows what he’s doing, he’s current, he knows what's up, Bawumia is old school. He’s younger but his thinking is old school.

“Go to South Africa, Switzerland, France, UK, there are so many 24-hour clubs,” he said.

He argued that the policy is not just about afternoon clubbing, but about providing people, especially those working night shifts, with the opportunity to relax and access various facilities at any time of the day.

“It's not about going to clubs in the afternoon, it's about closing from work after a night shift and being able to go to a club in the morning or afternoon to relax. Nothing is stopping them.

“It’s about being able to access certain facilities at any time of the day. That's what the 24-hour economy is all about,” he said.

What is the 24-hour clubbing?

The former President, during the official campaign launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto held at Winneba over the weekend, stated that should Ghanaians make him president again, nightclubs in Ghana would operate for 24 hours, seven days every week, as a part of his ‘24-Hour Economy Policy’.

“Hospitality industry; our restaurants, our discotheques, our nightclubs, our hotels, 24/7, 24 hours a day” were the exact words the former President used in explaining the ‘24-Hour Economy Policy’ promised by the NDC would be implemented in the hospitality sector.

The announcement ignited commentaries on social media, with some netizens mocking the campaign promise.
