Hiplife has come a long way, from the early nineties(90s).It started with a microphone and a Dj serving a beat for you to do your thang. It was all about lyrical ability, wordplay and how you can shake the crowd. It was all about freestyling around the corner, entertainment time in schools, local rap competetions, and battling each other.
However in 1996,hiplife became mainstream thanks to Reggie Rockstone a.k.a Oseikrom President. He made everybody sing along, even grandpa dancing to his beats and trying to catch his words. He opened the gate for hiplife greats like Lord Kenya,Obrafour, okomfo and many more.Hiplife ever since has become a force to reckon with.It has gained publicity if not more than the traditional Hilife.
But however it has also genereted controversy than any genre of music ever to come out of ghana. When we talk of controversial songs, one name pops out immediately.(SIDNEY)Formerly 1/3 of the legendary group Nananom. He is so good in causing controversy than Kanye West or Clinton affair with Monica Lewinsky. He has been compared to the infamous Daddy Lumba. His ability to create controversial but hot song every year in no doubt makes him a genius. He is the undisputed champion in making sweet but controversial songs.(SCENT NO,OBIA YE OBIA AND AFRICAN MONEY)
But he better watch out cause one of the biggest songs of 2008 was soo contoversial that it made more noize than obama's victory.Give me blow, give me blow, give me blow.3x.It was soo catchy,It has made rappers thinking and asking how did he do it?.A-s-e-m,how he prefers to be called has gone on to win awards at the 2009 Ghana Music Awards.
Every year one or two songs pop out out that make the nation shake. No wonder there is a new song Wo mame Twen making noize across the nation.Every local spot is jaming it.there is not a single day you wont here it on Bantama high street.when you are at Kaldorf, you will most certainly feel the vibe. The name itself makes you think twice like celion Dion or phil collins. But the artist behind it Menace T has explained it on many interviews, the song means (YOU KEEP ME WAITING).The beat is so wonderful crafted that you will even forget the words and dance to it.The man behind the beat is pocalous.2009 is going to be hot.
However Hiplife has been attention of discussion on many platforms.but there is beyond resonable doubt it has created employment among the youth and created security.
