Controversies hit Ghana Movie Awards

Mon, 28 Nov 2011 Source: eugene osafo-nkansah/peacefmonline.com

The full list of nominees for the second edition of Ghana Movie Awards was released over the weekend, at the flashy Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi during a glamorous nomination party in the garden city.

The night brought together both young and old movie stars, Film Directors, Producers, Editors, Costumiers, Make-up Artistes, among other film making professionals.

Notable faces like Chairman Kwami Sefa Kayi, John Dumelo, Fred Amugi, David Dontoh, Chris Attoh, Beverly Afaglo, Helen Asante, Prince David Osei, Nadia Buari, Salinko, Emilia Brobbey, among others were present on Saturday November 26, 2011 to grace the occasion amidst wining and dining.

Some stars went home disappointed for not clenching even a single nomination whiles others left the venue with smiles on their faces but the high light of the night was how Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Hollywood actress Kimberly Elise was nominated for a top award the “Best Actress In Leading Role (English Language) with the roles they played in new movie “Ties That Bind” produced by Leila Djansi.

There was mixed feeling and different reactions by some Ghanaian film stakeholders, some movie stars and even some media men about how the two foreign stars will be nominated for such a top award with a movie that has not been released in Ghana and why a separate category was not created for foreign stars that feature in Ghanaian movies.

Whiles others think there is nothing wrong with it, as far as they featured in a Ghanaian movie produced in Ghana by a Ghanaian.

Another shocker on the night was the nomination of child actor Rahim Banda in the “Best Actor In A Leading Role [English Language] with his role the movie “Behind the Mask” alongside screen big boys like Van Vicker, Majid Michel, Chris Attoh and Samuel Ofori.

This is the official full nomination list for the Ghana Movie Awards 2011 let the debate begin.
