Kumasi, May 13, GNA - A circuit court at Kumasi on Wednesday remanded Kwame Isaac, a 35-year-old mason from Kotwi, near Ejisu for poisoning his two-week-old baby.

His plea was not taken and will re-appear on May 18.

Police Chief Inspector Kuffuor Boateng told the court that Isaac befriended one Sarah Ayamba sometime last year and impregnated her. He said when the girl became pregnant, Isaac persuaded her several times to terminate the pregnancy but she declined and this strained their relationship.

Chief Inspector Boateng said following this development, the accused stopped visiting Sarah until she delivered a baby boy last month.

He said, however, that when the girl brought forth, Isaac visited her at Kotwi and while in the girl's room, the accused asked Sarah to fetch him water from outside the room.

The prosecutor said immediately Sarah left the room Isaac allegedly poisoned the baby.

Chief Inspector Boateng said on her return with the water, Sarah noticed a strange behaviour in her baby and this prompted her to call in her mother who asked her to send the baby to a nearby clinic.

He said the clinic also referred them to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where the baby was pronounced dead on arrival. The prosecutor said it came to light at the hospital that the baby had been poisoned and so a report was made to police who arrested the accused and charged him with murder.
