DStv highlights to end 2011

DStv viewers across Africa can end the year with some exciting TV viewing this week with some big Hollywood blockbusters, delightful African cinema and shocking reality TV. Check out some of the highlights:

Too Big To Fail: Chronicles the financial meltdown of 2008 and centres on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. DStv audiences can tune M-Net West on Tuesday 20 December at 01:25 CAT to get a close look behind the scenes, between late March and mid-October, 2008; and follow Richard Fuld’s benighted attempt to save Lehman Brothers; conversations among Paulson, Ben Bernanke (chair of the Federal Reserve), and Tim Geithner (president of the New York Fed) as they seek a private solution for Lehman’s; and, back-channel negotiations among Paulson, Warren Buffet, investment bankers, a British regulator, and members of Congress as almost all work to save the U.S. economy. By the end, with the no-strings bailout arranged, modest confidence restored on Wall Street, and a meltdown averted, Paulson wonders if banks will lend. Buy Me A Rose: James couldn’t believe his luck when the community doctor decides to pay for his university education. When he gets to university, he falls in love with Mimi, the daughter of the Senate President. The only problem is that he’s not of her social standing or class. DStv audiences can tune into Africa Magic on Tuesday 27 December 2011 at 20:00 CAT to find out whether true love conquers all. Cast: Olu Jacob, Ramsey Noah Jr. and Buki Ajayi.

Hadhafi Aka Wrong Choice: When a young woman insists on marrying someone she is in love with her mother tries her best to prevent the union as she believes the boy is of weak character and not from a reputable family. DStv audiences can tune into Africa Magic Hausa on Friday 30 December at 21:51 CAT to find out whether mother knows best. Cast: Ali Nuhu, Sani Musa Danja and Kubura Dhako.

Igboran: A bitter woman goes about getting revenge by destroying her sister’s life. DStv audiences can tune into Africa Magic Yoruba on Saturday 31 December at 21:20 CAT to find out what happens. Cast: Yinka Quadri, Babatunde Omidina and Bukky Wright.

Sunshine State: This movie starring Edie Falco and Angela Bassett features two vibrant women caught between their past and their future. Both are struggling to find a way to become independent women in a place where everyone and everything seems to conspire to make them return to the roles of children under the rule of formidable parents. DStv audiences can tune into M-Net Stars on Monday 26 December at 19:30 CAT to watch.

Fat Doctor (Premiere Season): In Fat Doctor, bariatric surgeon Shaw Somers conducts life-saving and last resort operations to help morbidly obese people lose weight in order to save their lives. DStv audiences can tune in to Zone Reality from Monday to Friday at 14:00 CAT from 26 December to watch not only the surgical procedures being performed but what happens after the operations, and how the patients’ lives have changed. In early episodes, we meet 48-year-old Gary Buckingham who, in desperation, is considering a gastric bypass operation. His health is suffering and he fears not living to see his children grow up. After receiving shocking news that he has a 1 in 10 chance of not pulling through the operation, Gary is faced with the life or death decision of going under the knife. Also, in the series is an episode that shows a man whose life drastically changed after a gastric bypass.
