Dear GhanaWeb: My husband hits me and I’m carrying his child

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 38-year-old woman, married to a 47-year-old man. We didn’t date for a long time before getting married. He wanted to get married so quickly due to his age.

We dated for only 6 months and we’ve been married for over two years now.

He’s a good and supportive man. He’s very caring but has a habit of hitting me when he’s not sober.

He drinks and smokes a lot. He smokes once in a while but drinks often. He is someone who likes having fun. He doesn’t stay home much. When he’s free, he likes to go out with his friends and he often returns drunk.

When he drinks, he is very quick-tempered. But when he’s sober, he’s so sweet. He’s the only man who gives me everything I’ve ever needed physically and emotionally. I’m so happy and I can afford whatever I need right now. He makes sure I’m comfortable.

I’m currently three months pregnant and he won’t stop hitting me. I’ve tried since the beginning of this pregnancy to run away from him just to save the baby and I.

I don’t want to lose or miscarry this baby because of my age. I’m already having complications and it took us months for me to even get pregnant. I’ve been through a lot already.

He told me he wanted this baby too because it’s his first. He cherishes the child and I so much that he’s doing everything to ensure we’re okay.

Then when he goes to drink or smoke, he starts to misbehave and hit me anyhow. He always returns to make an argument, I don’t know if it’s a spirit.

These days, I just hide or leave the house when he goes out but I can’t keep doing this.

Last night, he returned and the moment he got home, he said the house was smelling. The same house we stayed in all day with no smell. I tried to tell him there wasn’t an odour, but he insisted and asked me to clean everywhere at almost 12 am.

I couldn’t, everywhere was okay and I was tired too. I work a full-time job and I do all my duties as a wife as well.

He started hitting me, knowing I’m pregnant. Even when I came cleaning, he was still throwing punches at me. There was no dirt but I was just doing it.

I have a good and loving man but his problem is drinking and a bit of smoking and then, hitting me. What do I do?
