Renowned female Radio personality, Mrs. Adjoa Owusu Kussi, known by many as Ohemaa Woyeje, has empowered women who are willing to take Djing as their career.
Ohemaa Woyeje who has won the Best Female DJ on radio three times at Ghana DJs Awards said, there are few female DJs in Ghana currently because most of the females think the work of a DJ is a male game which shouldn’t be so. It is rather an open field for everyone who wants it as a career be it a male or a female.
In an exclusive interview with Flex newspaper, she revealed that most of the male DJs prevent the female presenters from exhibiting their ‘deejaying’ skills for the fear of risking their jobs as DJs. To her, most of the males survive in this industry for their ‘deejaying’ skills and anytime a female presenter who is also good at ‘deejaying’ tries playing songs on her own, they are prevented by this male DJs thereby limiting the females to only presentation on radio, an act she frowns against.
She urged her colleague female presenters who have DJing skills to be very bold and look smart because, most of the male DJs after knowing how versatile you are on the job will try humiliating you until your talent as a DJ is being killed.
She continued that deejaying is a job which needs continuous practice. This practice will help you acquire more skills on the job which will help you gain a solid ground, being musically inclined and knowing the kind of music to play at a particular time is a hall mark of a good DJ which I believe most of my female presenters posses, why do they sit aside clapping for the male DJ’s for something they can do and even do it better making the world believe that, DJING has got nothing to do with a female killing our own talent in the process.
“Some men are not even good DJs because their selection of songs are very bad which drives listeners away from their various programmes on radio, so if you are a female presenter who has the skills to DJ at the same time, then you need to step up your game because that’s the best thing to put you on top of your game,” she said.
Ohemaa Woyeje who is the current Best Female Radio DJ at the just ended Ghana DJs Awards added that she is much excited about the award she won because the first time she took the award, there were a lot of people who thought she is not a DJ, so they made much noise about the award she won but winning it for three consecutive times has vindicated her not only being a DJ but a good one at that. She also said she never thought of winning the award this time round because everyone who was nominated in that category was capable of winning the award. She was however not surprised she won because, her hard work has pushed her to win the award and she thanks God for that.
“In Ghana, you can’t win an award continuously for a period of time. If you win an award this year, the following year someone must also win that same award. Because you have won it several times, it will be taken from you to someone else and that I believe is a low key organizers need to work on,” she added.
In her final submission, she thanked the organizers of the Ghana DJs Awards for their effort and support which they have been giving to DJs in Ghana and Africa. Lastly, she thanked all those who voted for her to win the award again.
