‘Despicable Me’, MTV Europe Music Awards and more on DStv this November

DStv viewers across Africa can tune in to exciting blockbuster movies, drama, series, music and more this November as DStv offers an exciting line-up of programs. Here are some quick highlights of the month:

Despicable Me: In a happy suburban neighbourhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbours, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (yes, the moon!). DStv audiences can tune into M-Net West on Sunday 6 November 2011 at 22:00 CAT to watch Gru delighting in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes. Stars: Steve Carell, Jason Segel and Russell Brand.

Gifted Hands: A frustrated young boy with problems in school overcomes the obstacles in his life to become a world-renowned neurosurgeon. DStv audiences can tune into M-Net Movies 2 Africa on Tuesday 1 November 2011 at 13:05 CAT to watch this movie based on the true story of Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, whose lifelong journey led him to become director of paediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, a best-selling author and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Gospel Hill: Danny Glover, Angela Bassett, Julia Stiles and Samuel L. Jackson headline actor-turned-director Giancarlo Esposito’s ensemble drama about a small southern town still haunted by a racially motivated murder that occurred there thirty years prior. Civil rights activist Peter Malcolm (Jackson) was at the peak of his popularity when he was ruthlessly gunned down in the streets of Gospel Hill. Thirty years later, no one has ever been accused of the crime, and Peter’s brother John (Glover) has withdrawn from the community to ponder the full weight of his brother’s unfulfilled mission in solitude. DStv audiences can tune into M-Net Movies 2 Africa on Friday 4 November 2011 at 16:45 CAT to watch as John sinks ever deeper into a bottomless sea of despair; and his wife Sarah (Bassett), an outspoken community activist, campaigns tirelessly against a ruthless band of developers seeking to transform Gospel Hill into a golfer’s paradise. Realising the futility of convincing her listless husband to help fight such an arduous battle, Sarah instead turns to newly arrived Gospel Hill schoolteacher Rosie (Stiles) for support.

MTV Europe Music Awards 2011: After its launch in 1994 the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) are still going strong and this year the location is the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Off the back of last year’s successful event in Madrid, Spain, this year’s show promises to be no less entertaining, and in fact it will be the biggest showbiz event the country has ever seen! Seven New Faces in Seven Days: This heart-rending film follows a team of top surgeons undertaking an amazing challenge; to transform the lives of seven children with disfiguring congenital facial deformities, in just one week. The stakes could not be higher. In Vietnam, where the doctors set up hospital, there are a horrifically large number of these cases, and the youngsters are often ostracized, removed from their families, beaten and even stoned, just for looking different. One by one the children come forward, hoping for a new chance at life. The doctors have given up their own time to be here, and they desperately want to succeed. This is hazardous and pioneering work, with some instances more extreme than they have yet seen in their careers.
