Don't listen to musicians when we complain about award schemes - Nacee

Celebrated Ghanaian gospel artiste Nacee has entreated the general public to ignore musicians when they complain about award schemes in the country.

According to him, musicians are emotional, and thus their criticism of award schemes, especially when they do not get nominated, should be taken lightly.

Nacee said this in an interview with TV3 on May 3, 2024, where he shared his thoughts on the significance of music award schemes like the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) in Ghana, especially as it celebrates 25 years of recognising musical talent.

Nacee acknowledged that while artistes can be critical of award schemes, they also take pride in their accolades, especially on international platforms.

"As musicians, we are very emotional beings. Every time the nominee list comes out, we criticise it and make the scheme feel as if it has done nothing in our circles.

"But when we go outside Ghana, we go on interviews and we are asked if we, as musicians, have won any awards, we feel proud to say, 'Yes, I have won so, so, and so awards.'

"We are very emotional. As an artiste, you can be nominated, but if you see some categories in which you were expecting to be nominated and you are not in there, you will still complain. So, they shouldn't listen to us," he said.

Acknowledging the impact of the TGMA on the music industry, he urged corporate institutions to support award schemes like the TGMAs, highlighting the challenges of organising such events and the need for corporate backing.

"I think the scheme has done very, very well. We just have to encourage them, and the corporate world should support them because it's not easy to organise a program. For them to go through this kind of coaching and directing for 25 years, we applaud them," he said.
