The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Medical Director at Medicas Hospital, Dr. Yaw Osafo, has shed light on the four phases of sexual intercourse.
In an exclusive interview on the ‘Home Affairs’ show on Joy 99.7FM, Dr. Osafo explained the four phases and what they entail.
According to him, the first phase of sexual intercourse is the excitement phase. This phase is all about mental stimulation and mind games, with no physical intimacy involved.
“The first phase is the excitement phase. For instance, I am in the consulting room working, and my wife sends me a message. You look at the message and you start having concentration problems.
“So, the excitement phase happens, and there’s no physical intimacy; it’s all about mind games and imaginations.
That is why they say with men, the biggest organ of intimacy is the mind,” Dr. Osafo explained.
According to him, the excitement phase is what culminates in foreplay for most people.
Dr. Osafo named the second phase of sexual intercourse as the plateau phase.
He explained the plateau phase as the intensified form of the excitement phase, involving a lot of physical touch and intimacy.
Dr. Osafo mentioned that the second phase depends largely on the cultural upbringing of the lovers, with some being more exciting while others are more traditional.
He explained, “The second phase is the plateau phase, and it’s all about an intensification of the foreplay, involving a lot of physical intimacy. Whether or not you will enjoy it depends on culture.
“Culturally, lovers may start with a kiss and other activities, but there are others where the man instructs the lady to go and wait for him on the bed.
And I would say it’s because of their upbringing. That is what we call, ‘lay down, bam bam, thank you ma’am,’ and the man leaves.”
From there, Dr. Osafo mentioned orgasm as the third phase of sexual intercourse.
He described the orgasm phase as when both parties are at the peak of their feelings and emotions.
“After that, there’s orgasm, and that is the third phase. It doesn’t end there.
“With orgasm, you are there; you have reached Mars, and you are almost touching heaven,” he explained.
For the fourth stage, Dr. Osafo termed it as the resolution phase. For lack of a better word, the doctor described the resolution phase as the ‘Ahh stage.’
He says it is the stage where both parties are fully sexually satisfied and have descended from the peak of their emotions to a state of equilibrium.
