Driver attempts suicide in court

Hohoe, Oct.13, GNA - Vincent Adu, a 38-year-old driver on trial for traffic offences at the Hohoe Circuit Court, attempted suicide with his leather belt in the court cell on September 26.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Godknows M. Kobla, Hohoe Divisional Commander told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Adu in-charge of a Toyota Hiace plying the Ho-Hohoe road ignored police when asked to stop at Gbi Kledzo on August 23, this year.

ACP Kobla, said Adu failed to stop at another time, that compelled the police to chase, and arrested him.

He said Adu was charged with failure to stop, driving without licence, fire extinguisher and driving mirror. ACP Kobla said Adu was sent to court on August 25, but jumped bail and was subsequently re-arrested on warrant and brought to Hohoe from Ho and arraigned before court on September 16.

He said Adu re-appeared in court on September 26 and while in the court cells, attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with his leather belt, inmates in the cell raised an alarm, the police rushed to restrain him.

ACP Kobla, said Adu was sentenced on his own plea to two million cedis fine or in default serve 12 months imprisonment. He pleaded guilty to four counts of failing to produce driving licence, failure to stop, using a vehicle without driving mirror and fire extinguisher.

ACP Kobla said Adu was in addition sentenced to three months imprisonment in hard labour after pleading guilty to attempted suicide.
