Driver collapses in court

Accra April 12, GNA - A driver who appeared at an Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday for a traffic offence collapsed soon after the court ordered his remand into prison custody.

George Adenyo, who was arraigned on the charges of dangerous driving, offensive conduct and causing road obstruction, pleaded guilty. Adenyo told the court that he rather insulted another driver and not the Police Officer. According to him it was a passenger, who made him stop at the Odorkor Sakaman Traffic Light, and pleaded with the Court to deal with him, leniently.

The Court, however, did not accept his explanation and asked that he should be remanded into prison custody to reappear on April 26. This did not go down well with Adenyo, who collapsed in the dock. Adenyo was escorted to the court cells and three bags of pure water were poured on his head and feet.

People, who had thronged the scene, suggested that he should be offered some food. Instead a tin of milk was given him to drink but Adenyo did not come around.

His relations, who accompanied him to the Court and some Police personnel, therefore, rushed him to the Police Hospital for treatment. The case as presented by Police Chief Inspector Ben Darfuor was that at about 1000 hours this morning, Chief Inspector P.K. Hadzo, Station Officer of the Weija Police Station was coming from Weija to the Cocoa Affairs Court.

On reaching the Sakaman Traffic Light, Adenyo who was in the inner lane drove dangerously and crossed the vehicle in which Chief Inspector Hadzo was travelling.

Prosecution said when Chief Inspector Hadzo rebuked Adenyo for his behaviour, he shouted, obscenities to him. Chief Inspector Hadzo on reaching Odorkor Motor and Traffic Unit Office arrested Adenyo.
