And the winners are…

At the recently concluded Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2013, we got to see amazing fashion collections from every corner of the continent. From Nigerian design labels like Mai Atafo Inspired, Wana Sambo, Vonne Couture and Toju Foyeh to Ghanaian design labels like Duaba Serwa, Elikem, Ameyo, we were inspired and African fashion celebrated by fabulous runway designs.


However that wasn’t the highlight of the event. We all like to be recognized in our various fields and some of the designers and names behind promoting African fashion were. To crown the fashion extravaganza, GAFW awarded certain individuals for their fashion contributions throughout the year 2013, especially during the fashion week.


Check out the winners below.


Couture Designer of Year – Duaba Serwa


Ghanaian womenswear design label Duaba Serwa also received an award for Couture Designer of the Year at the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2013.

The design label which incorporates a mixture of innovative and intricate details, textures structures and new types of volumes as all about effortless and African fashion.


The label has been featured at ARISE Magazine Fashion Week Lagos, the 2012 Ghana Fashion & Design Week, Africa Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg, South Africa.


Emerging Designer of the Year – She by Bena


The She by BENA collection was one of the favourites at the 2013 Glitz Africa Fashion Week and was awarded the Emerging Designer of the Year award.


Owned by Sheila Garbrah, the design label was one of the winners of the Vlisco Fashion Dream Fund alongside Ghanaian designers Kyerewa Atakorah of April Rust.

Ready to Wear Brand of the Year – Wana Sambo


The Nigerian design label presented its “Voyage of Mademoiselle Adanna” collection during the recently concluded GAFW2013 fashion week in Accra, Ghana.


The award was presented to the designer on the same day of her fashion show. Wana Sambo was one of many brands that showcased their collections during the event to rave reviews.


On her award the designer said “I am grateful to GAFW for this award and their continued support of the Wana Sambo brand. With the voyage of Mademoiselle Adanna collection, I wanted to show pieces that exemplify womanhood, strong yet feminine, I am glad that it is getting such positive feedback”.


Female Model of Year – Mercy Ashie

Mercy Ashie is a Ghanaian model who has been taking the Ghanaian runway scene by storm.


The model, who was born in Accra, Ghana was shortlisted for Most Promising Female Model of the Year at the Ghana Model Awards 2013 and was awarded Model of the Year at the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2013.


Male Model of the Year – Prince Ibrahim


Model Prince Ibrahim, just like Mercy Ashie, was nominated for the Most Promising Model for the Ghana Model Awards 2013 but is a winner here as he snagged the award for the Model of the Year.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Joyce Ababio


Joyce Ababio received the Lifetime Achievement award during the Glitz Africa Fashion Awards to honour her contribution to the growth of African fashion and its propagators with her Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design (JACCD) .


The creative design institution launched in 2013 in Accra, Ghana and is a new design and independent private institution with programs in fashion design, graphic design and entrepreneurship.


The JACCD is the first school in Ghana to adopt and blend the liberal arts methods of education with design for the majors in Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design in Jewellery and Accessories and Textiles.


Experiencing the need to move the fashion industry in Ghana to the lime light, and what education can have on one’s life, Joyce Ababio embarked on a mission in 1995 to provide greater design educational opportunities in Ghana.
