The latest play by renowned playwright Ebo Whyte, Takeover, is currently showing at the National Theatre in Accra. The play tackles the complex theme of loyalty in Ghana.

The play is a commentary on the challenges Ghanaians face due to a lack of loyalty, a problem Whyte suggests is endemic in Ghanaian culture.

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV, the playwright, affectionately called Uncle Ebo Whyte, lamented the case of businesses collapsing due to disloyal workers and the difficulty in finding a trustworthy partner due to the lack of loyalty.

“Now if you are running a business for instance and it doesn't matter how well you take care of your workers, give them an inch and they will collapse the business because loyalty is absent and it comes into relationships, it goes everywhere.

“Now finding a partner you can trust with your life, I mean AC, you know so this is all part of what has given rise to this,” he said.

He said the play is not just a story set in a church but explores the broader themes of trust, loyalty, and discipline in families, particularly between fathers and daughters.

“Even though it is set in church I'm not really telling a church story I'm talking about something we can all relate to - father-daughter relationship loyalty, discipline and all that,” he said.

The play promises to offer a reflective look at these societal challenges, encouraging audiences to confront and relate to these critical aspects of Ghanaian life.
