Ghanaian rapper Edem has criticised media personality MC Portfolio amidst a debate over the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) ‘Artiste of the Year’ title.

Stonebwoy won the ‘Artiste of the Year’ award that year, and MC Portfolio, a supporter of Stonebwoy, has stepped in to defend the title.

Portfolio disagreed with Edem’s claim that the award was "stolen" from him and given to Stonebwoy, prompting the VRMG boss to respond.

MC Portfolio, while acknowledging Edem's feelings highlighted that 2015 was a remarkable year for Stonebwoy, who made history as the first Ghanaian to win a BET Award without sharing it with another African act.

Edem, in his swift reply, asked MC Portfolio to refrain from being what he described as “dogmatic” and assuming that every comment is an attack on Stonebwoy.

Edem clarified that his comments were not an attack on his peers but rather an acknowledgment of him and his team's hard work and what they felt they deserved from the VGMA board.

“Let me clarify that what you said is in response to selective reading. I didn't take the wind out of my brother's sail in my post. My brother is not ‘VGMA,’ he was in the category; if he won, the board decided.

"My comparison is parallel to that… I align with the work we did and what my team feel we deserve from the board... It's okay to be a fan/Stan but don't be so dogmatic that you believe everything is an attack,” he replied.

Background

The back-and-forth began after Edem expressed that the award had been unjustly taken from him in 2015.

Drawing a parallel to the recent Ballon d'Or results, where Vinicius Jr. was widely expected to win but did not, Edem described the decision as a "heinous crime" and "daylight robbery," similar to his experience in 2015.

He believes he was the rightful winner of the prestigious 2015 VGMA award, which went to another artiste instead.

Stonebwoy was crowned Artiste of the Year at the 16th edition of the VGMA awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 1, 2024, beating stiff competition from Daddy Lumba, Guru, Edem, MzVee, Sarkodie, and Samini.
