Every genre of music, either gospel or secular has a purpose - KOKA

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Kwaku Osei Koranteng Asiedu, also known as KOKA, has responded to the criticisms faced by Gospel artiste Ohemaa Mercy over her comments about listening to songs by some secular musicians.

Recall that in an interview on July 1, 2024, Ohemaa Mercy expressed her appreciation for songs that impart wisdom; she praised Kinaata and Stonebwoy for their positive and insightful lyrics.

Her comments were met with backlash on social media.

In an interview on Hitz FM on July 5, 2024, KOKA clapped back at the dissidents, stating that music, regardless of genre, can be a source of revelation and healing.

"I've seen some people (the 3 cedis data bundle people) insult and attack Ohemaa Mercy on social media. I think sometimes the mistake we make (as Christians) is we think the other genre has no purpose. You can't be in a society and choose to avoid certain people.

"We need to understand that all these songs are supposed to help us. They are songs that get us to revive, reset our memories, and think about things," he said.

He highlighted the Christian belief that all creation has a purpose, including every genre of music and every individual, and stated that Christians should not shun secular music or its artistes, as God's creation is reflected in all things and people.

"So you can't say because 'I'm a gospel artiste. I only listen to gospel music.' God can give you a song through another person's song, and then you can get your revelation or healing. We need to understand that there is a purpose for everything," he said.
