Ex-convict gets another four years for stealing

Sekondi, Feb. 12 GNA- A Sekondi Magistrate's court on Thursday sentenced John K. Teye, an ex-convict to another four years imprisonment for stealing.

Teye pleaded guilty and told the court that he had just completed a four-year jail term and that the court should have mercy on him. Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Andam Okyere told the court chaired by Mr. Seyram T. S. Azuma that the accused who was released from prison on February 1, approached Madam Veronica Bentsil and Mansah Gawugah, the complainants at their homes for food.

He said Teye again approached both complainants for food that evening, which they did.

Sgt. Okyere said however the following day when Teye went to the house of Veronica and found a half bar of key soap and a sachet of toffees, he took it, and went to the store of Mansah where he again stole two tins of Geisha tuna.

He was arrested and sent to the Police.

The prosecutor said at the Police station, Teye told the Police that he wanted to go to toilet and in the process, attempted to escape through a small window at the station but got stuck.

At the same court, Isaac Asibu, a 22-year-old fisherman was remanded in prison custody to re-appear on 26 February for stealing 300 metres electrical cables.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Sgt. Okyere said the complainant Mr. Steven K. Honny, a supervisor of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) said on Jan. 29 this year, a customer of ECG reported that power to his company, Phastor Limited, at Ngyeresia near Sekondi had been disrupted.

Sgt Okyere said based on this a team was dispatched to investigate and it was detected that the cables had been cut and this resulted in the disruption.

The prosecutor said the accused was found around the European Town beach with a sack containing the cables.

His uncle who is also a staff of the ECG, therefore arrested him and handed him over to the Police.
