A social justice and human rights group called the New Ghana Social Justice Forum has petitioned the organisers of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee to exempt Africa’s most decorated rapper, Sarkodie, from the list of musicians billed to perform at the Africa Fan Zone.

The group claims Sarkodie is a misogynist and has, on several occasions, disrespected women.

The group believes that Sarkodie is not deserving of the honour of performing at the Africa Fan Zone. The event, scheduled to take place on August 9, 2024, will be held at the Stade Robert Cesar in France.

To back their claims and prove that the rapper is a misogynist, the group cited a line from his hit single with Kurl Songx, ‘Jennifer Lomotey,’ where Sarkodie sang a line that suggested that women from the Krobo tribe of Ghana are promiscuous. He said, “Krobonii baa papa a ahweneɛ da ne sisi, Komfo Anokye de adwaman abɔ no dua,” to wit, “A beautiful Krobo lady with beads on her waist, she has been cursed with promiscuity by Komfo Anokye.”

The group, according to a report by 3news.com, also cited Sarkodie’s banter with his ex-girlfriend and actress Yvonne Nelson in his song ‘Try Me.’ In the song, the group said, Sarkodie slut-shamed the actress.

“Honouring Sarkodie with the stage at Africa Fan Zone raises concerns, particularly for women. Sarkodie’s past actions, such as labelling actress Yvonne Nelson a prostitute who belongs to the streets in response to her memoir ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,’ are troubling,” the report quoted the group.
