Accra, May 21, GNA - A 21-year-old unemployed who paraded as a medical doctor at the Korle Bu-Teaching Hospital in Accra was on Friday sentenced to 30 days imprisonment with had labour by an Accra Circuit Court. Derrick Amegbor pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without authority before the court presided over by Mr Justice Anthony Oppong.

The case of the prosecution was that, sometime in May this year, security officers at the hospital spotted Amegbor at the premises in a doctor's outfit. The security personnel then asked some of the doctors on duty about Amegbor's identity, since they had received information that Amegbor was parading as a medical doctor but the doctors denied any knowledge of Amegbor.

The prosecution said on May 14, one Millicent Adjei reported to the hospital's security that Amegbor had prescribed some medicines for his son and had collected 80,000 cedis from her to buy the medicines but she could not trace him (Amegbor).

The security personnel therefore, mounted surveillance and arrested him on May 18 and during interrogation he (Amegbor) attempted to escape but was apprehended, he later confessed being an impostor and pleaded for forgiveness. The prosecution said when Amegbor was handed over to the police, Esther Adeko, also reported that Amegbor had collected 250,000 cedis from her to purchase drugs he (Amegbor) prescribed for her.
