THE NKAWKAW Community Tribunal has remanded a farmer, Kwabena Ampadu, in prison custody for allegedly stealing ?1.7 million belonging to an accident victim at Awenade near Nkawkaw.

Chief Inspector Samuel Asare, who prosecuted the accused, told the Tribunal chaired by Mr. William Boampong that a KIA truck driven by one Brefo Kwaku Moses was involved in an accident at Awenade on February 21, this year, and sympathizers, including Ampadu, rushed to the scene to rescue the passengers, who were trapped in the vehicle.

He said Ampadu went to the front seat of the vehicle and allegedly picked the money wrapped in a newspaper.

The prosecutor said somebody saw Ampadu picking the money and confronted him, but he denied and said he only took a newspaper.

He said Ampadu left the scene to his house and hid the money and returned to the scene of the accident.

According to the prosecutor, the driver later recovered from the injuries he sustained and informed his car owner of the loss of the amount.

He said the car owner and the driver went to Awenade to enquire from the residents about the money and somebody identified Ampadu as the one who picked the money from the vehicle.

A report was, therefore, made to the police for Ampadu's arrest.

Hearing continues.
