The National Film Authority (NFA) has confirmed that the government’s GH¢20 million allocation to the Film Development Fund has been secured and is on course to become operational in the second quarter of 2026.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NFA, James Gardiner, made the announcement at the Ashanti Film Summit, where industry stakeholders convened to deliberate on the future of Ghana's film sector.

"The Ministry of Finance has allocated GH¢20 million to the Film Development Fund, which is scheduled to be operationalised in the second quarter of 2026," Gardiner stated.

He described the fund as a strategic intervention designed to stimulate growth across the entire film value chain, going beyond production to cover capacity building, distribution and market access.

"It is designed to unlock opportunities, attract additional investments and improve the overall competitiveness of Ghanaian films," he said.

However, Gardiner noted that the money alone would not transform the industry.

He called for a clear operational framework, strong governance structures and a collective commitment to accountability and results to ensure the fund delivers on its promise.

“However, funding alone will not transform the energy. It must be supported by a clear framework, strong governance and a shared commitment to accountability and results,” he added.

The announcement aligns with a broader push by the Mahama administration to invest in Ghana's creative economy, with a separate GH¢20 million allocation also allocated to the broader creative sector.
