Emmanuel Aryeetey, a 32- year old fisherman who attempted to set another fisherman ablaze for intervening in a quarrel, was on Friday remanded for two weeks by a magistrate's court at Elmina.
Aryeetey, pleaded guilty with explanation to attempted murder, but the court, presided over by Mr Kwame Ohene-Essel on hearing the facts of the case, advised the police to substitute the attempted murder charge with either arson or threat of death.
Chief Inspector Keyward Adjei had told the court that both the complainant Patrick Blassey and the accused were fishermen and natives of Osu in Accra, but had been living at Ayesa, a suburb of Elmina. He said on February 29, this year, the accused picked a quarrel with an elderly man and Blassey who was there, advised him to stop but he took offence and threatened to kill him.
According to Chief Inspector Adjei, Blassey also runs a shop and that whilst he was asleep in front of his shop later that day, a passer-by spotted Aryeetey sprinkling some petrol around where Blassey was sleeping, and set the place on fire, but people nearby managed to put out the fire.
