Nigerian artiste, Chike
Popular Nigerian artiste Chike has added his voice to the #FreetheCitizens online campaign currently trending on social media.
The online rally began amid the 3-day #StopGalamseyNow and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests which took place from the 21st to the 23rd of September 2024 and saw the arrests of some protestors including Socialite Ama Governor and walking artist Glenn Samm.
The arrests sparked the #FreetheCitizens campaign which has seen several Ghanaian personalities including Efya, Camidoh, Efia Odo and many others joining in.
In light of this, Nigerian singer-songwriter and actor, Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka, popularly known as Chike, has added his voice to the campaign.
In a post on his X handle on September 25, 2024, Chike shared his support for Ghanaians, posting “Ghana, we are with you! #FreetheCitizens.”
Chike is the second international figure, after Kenyan CNN journalist Larry Madwo, to have expressed their support for the online campaign.
Background
The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters were arrested during their demonstration, which took place over the weekend.
The arrests followed a three-day protest at the 37 military Roundabout, where demonstrators raised concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.
On Sunday, September 22, tensions escalated as a major confrontation occurred between protesters from Democracy Hub and the Ghana Police Service, marking the second day of the demonstrations.
The protestors have been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court. They face five charges: conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct, breach of public peace, and assault on public officers.
They pleaded not guilty to all charges and are set to reappear in court on October 8, 2024.
