The maiden edition of the People’s Choice Awards is going through many phases indeed.
From changing the name from People’s Choice Awards to GN Bank People’s Choice Awards, there is a new title for the awards scheme to comply with court directive.
The new name for the awards is GN Bank Awards – honouring the People’s Choice, GhanaGist.Com can report. The organizers have changed the name because of a legal controversy revolving around the name of program.
According to the Edwin Kweku Edinkrah, CEO of Spyder Lee Entertainment in a press statement, his outfit had successfully and legally registered People’s Choice Awards as a business at the Registrar General’s Department and subsequently registered GN Bank People’s Choice Awards as a trademark yet had been embroiled in a legal tussle with Evolution International over the ownership of the name People’s Choice Awards.
He said in April 2014, Spyder Lee Entertainment in a two week media campaign massively publicized the introduction of the awards and went on to launch the awards in November 2014. Surprisingly, weeks after the launch event, Spyder Lee Entertainment was notified of the registration of People’s Choice Awards by Evolution International and a request to desist from the use of the name People’s Choice Awards which resulted in a law suit.
On Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Fast Track High Court, the presiding judge, Justice Anthony Yeboah placed in injunction restraining both Spyder Lee Entertainment and Evolution International from using the name ‘People’s Choice Awards’ until the case is settled between both parties.
GN Bank Awards – Honouring the People’s Choice is an annual multi sector awards scheme to celebrate practitioners within the Ghanaian showbiz industry who have contributed to the development of the industry.
The maiden GN Bank Awards billed for March 21, 2015 at the Accra Conference Centre.
