Acclaimed Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang has expressed his concern over the deteriorating state of water bodies in parts of the country due to the activities of illegal mining (galamsey).
In an interview on Accra-based 3FM, Anang described his heartbreak upon seeing the extent of pollution and urgently called for collective action to address the crisis.
"It was heart-breaking because we must have seen this coming and everybody sat there unconcerned.
“It's time for us to make noise about this and keep making noise because our lives are at stake at this moment," Anang lamented.
Anang voiced his support for ongoing efforts to combat water pollution, including demonstrations and alarms raised by medical practitioners.
"I support the causes of making sure that we arrest this case so that lives are saved," he stated.
He, however, stated that these forms of activism should be done lawfully, noting, "As long as we are doing these things within the confines of the law, we're good, we're safe.
“But if we cross, then it becomes a bit, you know, then we have this tug of war going on,” he added.
The actor called on the government and citizens alike to prioritize environmental health and governance, urging everyone to take responsibility for the love of the country.
