Galamsey Menace: We need a ban on mining for a while to save our lives - Uncle Ato

Renowned Gospel musician Uncle Ato has voiced his concerns over the escalating issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with 3FM about the environmental and health impacts of galamsey Uncle Ato called for urgent action to address the problem.

Uncle Ato noted that he was born in Tarwa, where galamsey has long been an issue, but lamented that the situation has worsened significantly.

"It's a no no. We need to stand together because our water bodies, our trees, our lives are in danger," he stated.

“It's a no no. I was born in Tarwa, galamsey was going on that time. But the level it has gotten to now, it's a no no. We need to stand together because our water bodies, our trees, our lives are in danger.

"I hear now people are afraid to eat the head of the fish because that's where mercury accumulates. So it is something we need to address,” he said.

Drawing parallels to a successful ban on fishing during closed seasons, Uncle Ato suggested a similar approach for the mining sector.

He advocated for a temporary freeze on mining activities to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future.

"I remember how we were able to put a ban on fishing for a while. Initially, it was difficult, but we benefitted.

“I think the mining area needs such… for some time to save our lives and our future. It's a serious issue," he said.

Uncle Ato's call to action comes amid increasing demands from various labour groups, environmentalists, health practitioners, clergy, and concerned citizens for stricter government measures to address the galamsey crisis, which has led to escalating environmental damage.
