Ghana Actors’ Guild Launches Newsletter

The Ghana Actors’ Guild (GAG) on Tuesday launched a newsletter to create a platform for its members and to inform the general public of its activities and plans.

The newsletter would be published monthly and deal largely with official issues and the more intimate matters.

Launching it, the Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Kofi Asamoah, called on government to look into ways to strengthen the theatre instrument to enable the country reap the full benefits that the industry offers.

He said the threat posed to the film industry by the influx of foreign films and real and must be addressed by the appropriate national authorities.He said the power of theatre in shaping popular opinion cannot be overemphasized, adding that GAG, stands at an advantageous position in facilitating positive national orientation.

Mr. Asamoah stated that the heavy influence of Western Cinema on Ghana is perhaps the inadequacy of Ghanaian Cinema.“Given the inadequacy of Ghanaian Cinema, Western Cinema comes handy in filling the vacuum” he explained.He stated that, through theatre, the negative impact of social ills can be re-echoed to facilitate positive change of behavior.

He encouraged GAG to come out with strategies and concrete proposals on how Ghana can unlock the full potentials of actors for national development and to help promote the interest and well-being of actors in Ghana.

Efo Kodjo Mawu Gbe Director, National Theatre Boss advised members to contribute to the newsletter to help sustain and maintain it.The president of GAG, Nii Odoi Mensah said that the newsletter would help officialdom to change its attitude toward the arts generally and those of its departments that depend on actor such as the movies and theatre.
