The Ghana Tourism Authority officially launched the 2024 Emancipation Day celebrations at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
The event, which will run from July 22 to August 1, was indicated in a statement by Mark Okraku Mantey, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, on behalf of Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
In his address, the Deputy Minister highlighted the theme for this year's celebrations: "Unity and Resilience: Building Stronger Communities for a Brighter Future."
He emphasized that the theme reflects Ghana's shared history and common aspirations, drawing strength from the resilience of ancestors to build stronger, more cohesive communities.
"Slavery and emancipation are real-life events in our history. They are symbols of the remarkable capacity of the human spirit to struggle and triumph over adversity. We have always known ourselves to be people who have turned our hearts against injustice, inhumanity, and deception," he said.
He also noted the importance of moving beyond the recrimination and mutual distrust that have lingered between the African diaspora and those on the continent, urging unity and collective effort for full liberation, particularly through economic emancipation and social evolution.
The Deputy Minister called on Africans at home and abroad to embrace the internationalization of Emancipation Day, recognizing its significance in the global context.
He paid tribute to the ancestors whose struggle and determination laid the groundwork for emancipation, encouraging all to let their legacy inspire current and future generations.
The launch was attended by key figures in Ghana's tourism sector including board members of the Ghana Tourism Authority, directors and staff of MOTAC, and various private sector tourism industry players.
Representatives from the African Diaspora and members of the media were also present.
As the celebrations were officially launched, the Deputy Minister expressed hope that this year's Emancipation Day would help all explore, appreciate, and preserve Ghana's cherished heritage.
"Long live Emancipation! Long live the African Diaspora! Long live our homeland, Ghana!" he concluded.
The CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, also delivered a stirring speech celebrating the resilience and bravery of Ghana’s ancestors.

"We are here to celebrate the courage of our ancestors. They were beaten, but they survived, so today we can look back to celebrate their courage and bravery, drawing inspiration from their determination," Agyeman stated.

"Emancipation is also about celebrating our dynamic culture and something that makes us unique as Africans," he said.

The theme of unity was central to Agyeman's message.
"We are also here as a united community," he declared, calling for a collective commitment to uphold the values of justice, freedom, and equality.
Emancipation Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity in addressing contemporary challenges.
"Emancipation Day is also about continuity. We need to reconnect with ourselves and find ways that we can continue the struggle and commitment to fight for justice, freedom, and equality to eradicate poverty so that no child should go to bed on an empty stomach.," he added.
His call to action was a poignant reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to build a just and equitable society.
