Ghana-based TAYUTApilgrim to perform at Bronx art exhibition

TAYUTApilgrim, a Japanese world music duo residing in Ghana are set to perform at the opening of “Tropic of Celebrants Installation” by famous mixed media sculptor and astrologer, Amir Bey, in Brook Park, Bronx, New York on June 14.

The music duo made up of Masa and Hirono have toured Nepal, India, Burkina Faso, Togo and New York with harmonic vocals backed by drums and a guitar dazzling audiences with delicate doses of soul, Afro beats, and world music fused with messages of peace and respect for Mother Nature.

They have performed in Ghana at Alliance Francaise showcasing the harmonic sound of Hirono's singing and the powerful and uplifting beats from Masa's drum and guitar.

The exhibition which lasts till July 26 consists of the 36 figures from Amir Bey’s Equinox Celebration Tarot, each an individual character with a name such as: She Brings The Gift of Music, Supreme Juggler, In Definance of Definitiion, or La Danceuse. These figures are part of an ongoing project that he began in 1976, when the original Celebrants were sculptures carved out of African Wonderstone.

Tropic's figures, most of which were made for this exhibition, are cut from galvanized steel and copper foil, with different patinas from acids and flame and texturing made with ball-peen hammers and knives.

They will be attached to trees in the park in an adaptation of their usual order, where the locations of the trees contribute to a more organic layout. The figures are intended to oxidize and weather in a natural process during the six-week installation.

Brook Park, the site of the art installation, is the home base of environmental organization, Friends of Brook Park, FoBP and located at the corner of Brook Ave. and 141st St.
