Award-winning Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah has explained why comedians in Ghana are constantly forced to create new jokes, attributing it to the nature of the local audience.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM on December 16, 2025, OB Amponsah mentioned that his training and experience in Ghana played a major role in shaping his comedy career.

“I take my joy from my training in Ghana because we always write new jokes in Ghana,” he said.

According to him, Ghanaian comedians often perform for the same audience, making it impossible to recycle material.

“We have the same audience all the time and you can’t tell same jokes to same audience,” he explained.

OB Amponsah noted that this challenge pushed him to constantly develop fresh content, which eventually helped him stand out.

“Every round, I had a new joke and that kind of set me apart from others,” he shared.

He contrasted the Ghanaian comedy scene with that of foreign comedians, whom he said do not always face the same pressure.

“When a foreign comedian gets one set of jokes, that’s what he would keep using because the audience is always different. They don’t have the challenge of writing new jokes always,” he stated.

OB Amponsah said the discipline of consistently writing new jokes paid off for him on the international stage.

“That’s what pushed me through and I won some $2000, alongside winning the Ultimate Comedy Challenge in NC, USA,” he added.
