Revered Ghanaian actor, journalist, and former Information Minister, Fritz Baffour, has voiced his concern over the nation's tendency to celebrate trivialities at the expense of truly commendable figures.

His remarks were made at a press soiree at the Ghana Club in Accra, held in honor of the esteemed Ghanaian photographer James Barnor on Friday, May 31.

Fritz Baffour, who attended the event as a special guest, expressed his belief that figures like Barnor have not received the recognition they deserve.

Speaking to citinewsroom.com, he lamented that the current cultural climate celebrates ‘fools’ and ‘underachieved individuals’ rather than venerating those who have dedicated their lives to positive impact.

“We've not celebrated our icons as well as we should. We tend to be more concerned with politics and other mundane matters than celebrating the good that we have.

“We celebrate fools, foolish people… people who have not achieved anything, we celebrate people who are like fireflies. Instead, people who shine the light all their lives like this man who is 95 years old and is still talking and encouraging people to do the right are not celebrated,” he said.

The actor also addressed the issue of division within the country, attributing it to political discord and urging Ghanaians to embrace a new direction that fosters national pride.

“The thing is that all of us need direction. Direction can come from policy. It can come from ourselves, you understand? But Ghanaians need a sense of direction, a sense of direction that will make us proud of who we are,” he said.

As Ghana prepares to celebrate Barnor's 95th birthday on June 6, 2024, with the James Barnor 95 Festival, Baffour highlighted the event's significance as a homage to Ghana's rich cultural heritage and artistic innovation.

The festival not only pays tribute to Barnor's legacy but also seeks to leave an indelible mark on the Ghanaian arts and cultural landscape.
