Ghanaian comedian and emcee, Derrick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB has observed that Ghanaians are not mature when it comes to politics.
Detailing why he would not campaign for any political party regardless of the amount involved, DKB stated that politics in Ghana is characterized with all forms of abuses.
According to him, Ghanaians, unlike Nigerians will hit hard at any showbiz personality who publicly declares his support for an opposing political party.
“In Nigeria, it is a different ball game. Basket Mouth supports Goodluck Jonathan and as at now, his job is still intact. Nobody attacks him because Nigeria has mature when it comes to politics and society in general. Ghanaians haven’t mature, reasons why we take politics too personal,” he said on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz on Thursday.
DKB cited instances where John Dumelo was verbally abused after the actor declared his support for NDC and was subsequently spotted at the party’s rally grounds.
“John Dumelo came out for NDC and today, all sort of negativity is thrown at him. Ghanaians are not mature enough. Even the little jokes I say about Mahama, they come at me, insulting me and all. That’s because we are not mature to distinguished personality from political affiliation,” he noted.
When host KMJ asked if his remarks meant he was concerned about his job, DBK answered in the negative saying, “It’s not about my job. I want to be able to lash out at NPP and NDC when I want. I don’t want to have an induced thinking.”
A number of showbiz personality have shown their political affiliations to the two major political parties in Ghana – National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) – to the extent of contesting for parliamentary seats on the ticket of their respective political party choices.
With Ghana advancing in democracy, a section of the public has called on the populace to respect the choices of others as the constitution guarantees freedom of association.
