The third season of TV3’s ‘Mentor’ has entered its third week but there have been only two shows so far. Last Sunday’s programme started with 11 contestants singing Phil Collins’ ‘Everyday’. The 12th contestant, Bright, who represented the Ashanti Region decided to opt out of the contest apparently to go to school abroad. Bright performed Kojo Antwi’s ‘Enfa Me Nko Ho’ during the first night of the Mentor III.

So after a brief montage on why Bright was leaving the competition and the group performance, each contestant had to leave the safety and support of numbers and stand out on their own.

Erico ‘The Rock’ was up first singing another Phil Collin’s number. The song didn’t quite suit his voice or his personality. His slightly over-sized coat may have got in his way too. But his performance clearly displayed that he had more power and less melody in his voice. He even gave Rama Brew a rose during his performance, hoping to win some positive remarks from her, but she still thought it was merely an ok performance. Mark asked him to differentiate between a praise and worship song at church and a love song. Next up was Nana, undoing Case’s ‘Missing You’. It was a near appalling performance sending many sensitive ears begging for mercy. Akon’s ‘Africa’ was Paul’s choice last Sunday night and even after a false start, he did much better than his first performance in the contest.

The back-up vocalists however were a bit too loud, causing distortions in the sound. Dominic thought Paul had a nice voice, but used it wrongly. Gina’s squeaky version of ‘How Do I Live’ put Mark’s head on the table and left all four judges with long faces. Rama thought it was a ‘mediocre performance’. Mark knew that she would ‘goof with that song’ and rightly so.

Ras Lisa made good use of his rasta moves to sing Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’. Dominic thought it was just ok and guest judge Laurencia wanted to see ‘something different’. Laurencia was taken aback by Lisa’s winter boots, suggesting that she might have been “baking” in them.

Faya sang Mario Vasquez’s ‘Gallery’ and took it straight to the dumps with his over-elaborate Usher moves. Mark’s comments were right on. He felt Faya struggled through the song and Rama believed the crowd was getting into his head.

The most impressive performance last Sunday was Dela’s. She did a great rendition of Beyonce’s version of ‘Fever’ and she deserved Dominic’s handshake . Mark was so impressed he couldn’t comment on Dela’s performance. Keep an eye on Dela.

Last to take to the stage last Sunday was Peter, who is determined to look tattered and even though he hyperventilated throughout his song, the audience still cheered ‘More Fire!!!’

Based on this week’s performances, Paul and Ras Lisa are our bottom two. They barely kept their heads above water this week.

True to JIVE’s prediction a fortnight ago, Gina has been evicted from the competition, reducing the Eastern Regional contingent. After her dreadful performance, of LeAnn Rimes’ ‘How do I Live’ it was obvious that she wasn’t ready for the competition and to have let her go through another week would have been torture for most of us.
