Osino (E/R), Dec. 24, GNA - The Zongo Community at Akim Osino in Fanteakwa District of Eastern Region was thrown into a state of mourning when the walls of an abandoned gold pit collapsed killing Yaya Seidu, a gold digger. Mr Awudu Chamba, Seidu's family Spokesman, told the GNA that the deceased had been engaging in small-scale mining because the gold reef, which was found in most parts of the country, came close to the surface in area.
Osino (E/R), Dec. 24, GNA - The Zongo Community at Akim Osino in Fanteakwa District of Eastern Region was thrown into a state of mourning when the walls of an abandoned gold pit collapsed killing Yaya Seidu, a gold digger. Mr Awudu Chamba, Seidu's family Spokesman, told the GNA that the deceased had been engaging in small-scale mining because the gold reef, which was found in most parts of the country, came close to the surface in area. He said on Friday, the deceased accompanied by one Karim, went into the pit after they had drained the water from it. Mr Chamba said while Seidu was prospecting for gold part of the weak wall of the pit collapsed burying him. His friend, rushed home to inform members of the community about the calamity. He said the body was retrieved from the pit and conveyed to the Kibi Government Hospital for autopsy. Seidu have since been buried. The Police confirmed the incident and said they were investigating it.
