Nudity in some Ghanaian movies and reports of immorality within the acting fraternity must be of great concern to the trailblazers of the industry. The trend, which appears to be the norm in spite of screaming protests from both the media and general public, plus the seeming neglect of the Ghana Actors’ Guild (GAG), has prompted no other personality than Madam Grace Nortey to give a word of advice to the current crop of players.
Speaking to Jackie Appiah via a telephone call during Peace Fm’s ‘Entertainment Review’ programme recently, Madam Nortey advised the co-winner of this year’s African Movie Academy Awards’ (AMAA) for Best Actress in Lead Role to be mindful of her dressing and way of speaking, more so as she is a married woman.
According to her, even though the trailblazers were not able to accomplish the feats that Jackie and her colleagues have reached, she was pleased that the current crop have been able to win the ultimate, and urged them to be more active in GAG activities.
“I wish to congratulate Jackie and her colleagues for winning the award and urge them to forge ahead in all their endeavours. But my worry is that in spite of all their achievements, they are not assisting the Actors’ Guild. So they should come over and assist us,” she said.
On the issue of Jackie’s dressing, the celebrated actress stressed among other things: “I want to tell her that she should not mind whatever people say about her.
We thank God she has reached this far. Beyond that, she must be careful of herself because she is a married woman.
Married women don’t dress the way unmarried women do. My advice to her is that once she is a married woman, she needs to be mindful of her dressing, public speaking, and general way of life.
These are the things that will prove to all that she is a married woman. I beg her to take note and also thank her for making all of us proud”.
Responding, Jackie said she accepted the advice in good faith, adding that she respected Grace Nortey and had all along looked up to her as a godmother. She finally thanked her for the advice.
Public outcry against nudity and some immoral scenes in a number of Ghanaian movies had become topical of late, and Madam Nortey thinks the whip must first be directed at the dressing of married actresses.
Aunty Grace, a retired Ghana Education Service (GES) staff, who has been acting for over 25 years, had occasionally expressed concerns over what she thinks would not help the nation’s fragile entertainment industry.
The last time she spoke in the media, she complained about the proliferation of witchcraft in Ghanaian movies and appealed to filmmakers to tone down its usage in their themes.
