Ghanaian hairstylist and Guinness World Record holder, Chelsea-Abigail Owusu Ansah, has shared her motivations behind her record attempt.
Owusu Ansah set the new Guinness World Record for the most heads of hair locked in eight hours, achieving 27 locks in seven hours, 51 minutes, and six seconds.
The CEO of Yoga Locks accomplished this feat during a lock-a-thon on March 6, 2024, and her achievement has been recognised on the GWR website.
Speaking on Accra-based Neat FM on September 13, 2024, she explained her desire to challenge negative stereotypes surrounding dreadlocks and promote the hairstyle's acceptance.
"Many people avoid dreadlocks because they associate the hairstyle with negativity, opting instead for more complex and expensive styles," she said.
She added, "I wanted to educate people that they can choose simple hairstyles like dreads, which don't require expensive chemicals or procedures that can lead to issues like alopecia."
Chelsea-Abigail noted that due to past controversies surrounding Guinness World Record attempts, many Ghanaians had lost interest in such endeavours, resulting in limited publicity for her attempt.
However, she managed to garner some support from bloggers.
"I wasn't expecting much support from Ghanaians, so I was surprised by the turnout and the support I received," she added.
