D-Black is a music executive and entrepreneur
Ghanaian music mogul D-Black has challenged the conventional definition of success in the music industry, arguing that impact matters more than chart positions or streaming numbers.
“Success isn’t just about numbers or charts. True wealth is measured by impact, how many lives we uplift, how many doors we open,” he said.
The entrepreneur made the remarks while speaking at a panel discussion hosted by the US Embassy in Accra in March.
Reflecting on the conversation afterwards on Instagram, D-Black said that Afrobeats and hip-hop are not just music genres, but have become major drivers of the global economy.
"Afrobeats and hip-hop are no longer just genres; they are global economic forces. What stood out most was how African artistes are reclaiming these sounds through language, innovation and community, owning our narratives in ways that resonate worldwide," he wrote.
The music mogul argued that Africa's young population gives the continent an unmatched and largely untapped creative advantage.
“With Africa’s young population, the creative potential on the continent is unmatched and still largely untapped… that’s why building independent, family-led business structures is so important. Ownership protects creativity and ensures we aren’t trapped in exploitative systems,” he said.
Drawing from his own experience, D-Black pointed to his growing portfolio including his label Black Avenue Muzik and his nightclubs as a blueprint for what African creatives can build when they prioritise ownership.
The event, themed "Building a Business Empire through Afrobeats and Hip-Hop," also featured Afrofuture's Khadijat El and Electro Mirror, manager of Gyakie.
