Hip hop in africa stands tall because we are true to ourselves – Sarkodie

It is without doubt that African music is the new wave across the globe with the Western world paying much more attention to music from the motherland.

Apart from Afrobeats which seem to be at the forefront, hip hop is also gaining some grounds and multi award-winning Ghanaian rapper and CEO of SarkCess Music, home to Akwaboah believes there’s a distinct reason African hip hop is being patronized now more than ever.

Answering questions on the recent recognition of African hip hop on the globe and as to what makes our hip hop stand out at the MTV MAMA 2016 held at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg, Sarkodie stated;

“I guess it’s because we are true to ourselves. Hip hop is always been the voice of the voiceless and we represent that because we come from the bottom. When we say bottom, we came from the bottom so the whole energy towards it is 100%. Africa has always got it, it’s just that the world is now recognizing it”

With focus on South African indie rapper Cassper Nyovest breaking boundaries and making it to SWAY in the Morning and also being invited to join the Breakfast Club with Chamalagne the god on American based Power 105.1 to speak more one the floating stage which Kanye West recently replicated, it is quite evident that hip hop from the continent may soon blow.

Aside the focus on Caspper Nyovest who aims at recording with his role model Kanye West, Sarkodie recently recorded with Acehood (New Guy).

Mention can also be made of Davido featuring Meek Mill (Fans Me), D’Banj ft Snoop Dogg (Mr. Endowed Remix), D’Banj ft Kanye West, (Scape Goat Remix) and P Square ft Rick Ross (Beautiful Onyine).

Empire stars Taraji P. Hanson and Terrence Howard recently expressed interest in South African rapper AKA’s music after watching him perform in South Africa and even hinted a possible role in the US TV series.

According to recently released statistics, Drake’s One Dance which features MTV MAMA 2016 African Artist of the Year Wizkid and Kyla is the most streamed song ever on Spotify with over 880 million streams.
