US-based Ghanaian socialite Naana Donkor has come under attack from a section of the Ashanti community following some comments she made during an interview with Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Nana Agyemang Badu II, and subsequent remarks on social media.
Reports indicate that Naana Donkor's interview with the Dormaahene, who is a known rival of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and, by extension, the entire Ashanti kingdom, has sparked controversy.
The Ashantis have expressed anger over Naana's discussion about them with the Dormaahene.
The Dormaahene was recently in New Jersey for a fundraiser aimed at establishing a dialysis center in Sunyani.
During the interview, Naana Donkor praised the initiative but also made statements that were perceived as offensive by the Ashantis.
This led to a surge of criticism and attacks on social media.
In response to the backlash, Naana Donkor took to TikTok to defend herself.
She was said to have described her critics, particularly those from the Ashanti community, as "poverty-stricken" individuals with too much time on their hands.
In her live video, she asserted that she did not say anything that warranted the attacks and expressed her determination not to tolerate humiliation.
Naana emphasised that the issue at hand should not be about her but about the Dormahene’s good cause to establish a dialysis center.
She stated that the attacks were a plot to distract and shift focus from the Dormaahene’s project.
“I won’t keep quiet for you to walk over me. I won’t allow you Ashantis to destroy the good cause the Dormaahene has started or to destroy the aim of establishing a dialysis center. I am not someone you can walk over. I won’t sit there and watch you attack me. Bring it on.
"The Dormaahene’s initiative is to help sick people, particularly kidney patients. As a US citizen, I have access to quality medical care here, but this is about improving conditions back in Ghana. Stop attacking me and focus on the good this initiative can achieve. I used my own platform for this and don't know why you’re worked up over this. You are from Ghana, you know the challenges sick people face in the country and you want to destroy this initiative?,” she retorted.
What the Dormaahene said about his feud with Otumfuo in the Naana Donkor interview:
When asked about his feud with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and its impact on the community, the Dormaahene urged the youth to stay out of the conflict.
He emphasised that the disagreement is a matter between adults and advised respect for Otumfuo due to his seniority.
"My priority is the development of my town. I won’t engage in petty disputes. I encourage everyone to focus on the positive developments we’re working towards rather than getting caught up in personal conflicts," he stated.
“I will indulge those on social media, the youth, not to involve themselves in what’s happening. The issue is between grownups,” he stated.
